Gifts to Biology & Biochemistry contribute to...
Students best prepare for industry by learning technical skills through application of laboratory experiences. Placement of this equipment and/or expanded opportunity for hands-on research experience prepares UNW biochemistry students to meet the current needs of the biotechnology industry in Minnesota.
Currently proposed initiatives:
1. Bio Research Fellowship (Summer REU) for our students. Funding for stipends for students (and faculty and project supplies) to facilitate a formal summer research program for students. With formal advising from faculty, as well as a research-specific seminar series and journal club organized throughout a 10 week summer period. Students would be invited to stay in dorms on campus, fostering a sense of camaraderie. The Fellowship culminates with a Scholarship Symposium presentation.
2. This instrument would allow us to characterize fluorescent molecular probes which we are designing to be used with infrared light for superior tissue penetration during medical imaging.
3. Our newly arrived Dr. Ostrem will perform research especially applicable to future healthcare providers who will have direct contact with patients.
