Scholarship Story:
The Wade Wahl Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 to honor the life, faith, and lasting legacy of Dr. Wade Kevin Wahl. A 1978 graduate of Northwestern College, Wade returned to his alma mater in 1985 after earning his doctorate in psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. Over the next 18 years, he served as a professor of psychology, Director of Counseling Services, department chair, mentor, counselor, and friend to countless students.
Wade was known for his wholehearted love for Jesus, his passion for teaching, and his genuine investment in the lives of others. He loved being at Northwestern and helping students discover God's calling for their lives. His home was often filled with Psychology students gathering for meals, games, conversation, and encouragement. He traveled with students to conferences around the country, introduced them to graduate school opportunities, and faithfully supported them both inside and outside the classroom.
As a student, Wade demonstrated the qualities that would later define his professional life. He has been described as someone who excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the godly character traits that reflected the highest ideals of Northwestern. As a professor, Wade sought to bring wisdom, joy, compassion, and biblical insight to everyone entrusted to his care. His commitment to teaching was recognized when he received Northwestern's Excellence in Education Award in 1992.
On June 14, 2003, Wade passed away unexpectedly at the age of 46. The loss was deeply felt across the Northwestern community and beyond. Students, alumni, colleagues, and friends shared stories of how Wade had encouraged them, challenged them to grow in their faith, and helped shape their lives. One former student described the “chain of impact” Wade created through his investment in others, while another reflected on the priceless values he passed on to his students.
In response to Wade's passing, Northwestern and the Wahl family established the Wade Wahl Memorial Scholarship. Memorial gifts, alumni support, and proceeds from golf tournaments were directed into the fund, and a generous anonymous gift ultimately allowed the scholarship to become permanently endowed. Today, the scholarship continues to support students while honoring a man whose life was marked by faith, excellence, service, and a deep commitment to Christian community.
The scholarship seeks to recognize students who reflect the same qualities that defined Wade's life: wholehearted devotion to the Lord, commitment to excellence in every endeavor, and active engagement in the community of believers. Through this scholarship, Wade's influence continues to impact future generations of Northwestern students.
