Stephen R. Sullins Memorial Scholarship

The Stephen R. Sullins Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of a young man whose determination, creativity, and quiet strength continue to inspire others. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa, Stephen accepted a scholarship to Southwest Minnesota State University, where he pursued a degree in Chemistry. His goal was to become an anesthesiologist, reflecting both his interest in science and his desire to help others. Though his life was tragically cut short during his freshman year, his legacy of determination continues through this scholarship.

Stephen was known for his gentle personality and his dry, witty sense of humor. He was a devoted son, brother, and friend, always willing to serve others using his unique abilities. He often worked behind the scenes, programming lights and sound for school productions, operating cameras at church, and managing technical aspects of musical performances. While he did not seek recognition, his contributions had a lasting impact.

An early enthusiast in technology and electronics, Stephen showed remarkable creativity and skill. He developed customized solutions, such as converting vehicle dashboard lighting systems, and launched a small business selling his innovations. He also demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit through his work in home security sales.

This scholarship is awarded to students who reflect the qualities that defined Stephen’s life, including determination, service, and strong character. Through this scholarship, Stephen’s legacy lives on, encouraging students to persevere, to serve faithfully, and to pursue the path God has placed before them with confidence and courage.
