SPHERE Scholarship

Scholarship Criteria: Recipients must be full-time students at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, enrolled in the Adult Undergraduate program as single or married parents pursuing their education to better themselves. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate financial need. Recipients should also represent and demonstrate the high ideals of the Mission, Vision, and Values of the University of Northwestern – St. Paul. Awards will be based on strong Christian commitment.

Scholarship Story:

The SPHERE Scholarship, which stands for “Seeking Parents in Higher Education Rising to Excellence,” reflects a heartfelt commitment to supporting adult learners who are balancing the responsibilities of family, faith, and education. Established by Rita James, this scholarship is rooted in personal experience and a desire to remove barriers for others pursuing a similar path.

Rita’s journey at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul began after she became a Christian in 1994. Motivated by her faith and a desire to grow both personally and professionally, she enrolled in Northwestern’s Adult Undergraduate program, formerly known as the FOCUS program, in 1995. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1997, graduating Cum Laude.

During her time as a student, Rita experienced God’s provision in a meaningful way. Her employer covered the cost of her tuition and most of her books, making it possible for her to complete her degree. At the same time, she became increasingly aware that many other parents in the community did not have access to the same support. Reflecting on this, she shared, “I was extremely fortunate to have my tuition and most books covered by my employer. I felt there were many other single parents out in the community who do not have that opportunity. Therefore, financial need would probably deter their pursuit of higher education.”

That realization became the foundation for the SPHERE Scholarship. Originally designed to support single parents, the scholarship has grown over time to include both single and married parents who are returning to school while raising a family. Its purpose remains the same: to provide encouragement and financial support to those who are working hard to better their lives through education.

Rita’s vision for this scholarship is deeply rooted in gratitude. As an alumna who experienced God’s faithfulness during a pivotal season of life, she desired to give back in a way that would help others complete their degrees and pursue the calling God has placed before them. The scholarship reflects her belief that education can be transformational, especially for students who are navigating the complexities of family, work, and academic responsibilities.

Students who receive the SPHERE Scholarship are recognized not only for their financial need, but also for their perseverance, commitment to their families, and dedication to their faith and studies. They represent individuals who are striving for excellence while trusting God to guide their journey.

Through this scholarship, Rita’s story continues to inspire and support others. It serves as a reminder that God’s provision often comes through the generosity of those who have walked a similar path, and that the pursuit of education can open doors for both personal growth and future impact.
