Scholarship Story:

River City Church, formerly First Baptist Church of Minneapolis, was founded in 1853. River City Church exists to glorify God by renewing weary lives through relationship with Jesus. River City Church and the University of Northwestern - St. Paul share a deep and rich history dating back to 1902. Pastor William B. Riley of First Baptist Church founded Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School. Two other River City Church pastors also served as Northwestern presidents, including Reverend Billy Graham and Dr. C. B. Akenson. Furthermore, Dr. Robert Moyer, for whom Moyer Hall is named, is a former pastor at River City Church.

In 2018, River City Church embarked on a revitalization and replanting effort. There have been several stories to tell over the last six years, one of which is the sale of our beloved church building in downtown Minneapolis. The decision to sell the church building was not one taken lightly, and as a result of the sale, River City Church was able to tithe a percentage of the proceeds to local ministries.

Through kingdom generosity, River City Church believes the University of Northwestern is a perfect fit to receive a portion of those funds. River City Church values education by raising and releasing leaders into the world. Furthermore, River City Church desires to revive our shared history by starting the River City Church Endowed Scholarship to be given to students seeking an undergraduate degree in Biblical and Theological Studies or Christian Ministries.
