David Phillip Lerman Scholarship

Scholarship Criteria: Student recipients must be juniors or seniors, majoring in Finance if possible, and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater while enrolled at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul.

Scholarship Story:

The David Phillip Lerman Scholarship was established by Jean Kowalik Lerman in loving memory of her husband, David Phillip Lerman - a man whose life was defined by his devotion to God, his beloved wife, and the transformative power of education. Born in Chicago, Illinois, David's love of learning was evident from youth and culminated with a B.A. degree in biochemistry from the University of Chicago. Though he once dreamed of becoming a cardiovascular surgeon, he found his calling in the world of finance. He worked at the Chicago Board of Trade, where he traded futures and options, and later at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in marketing and education. He was a passionate educator and mentor.

David's professional journey spanned more than 35 years and took him across the country and around the world. He inspired students of all ages – from novice investors to seasoned professionals. He was a published author, a powerful communicator in the financial industry, and a generous advisor who shared his expertise with family, friends, and his church community. Whether leading seminars or offering one-on-one guidance, David's approach was marked by clarity, warmth, and a deep desire to help others. His succinct style, humor, and unshakable faith made him not only a respected teacher but a cherished friend.
