Scholarship Story:
The Judge James T. & Lydia E. Knutson Endowed Scholarship was established through the estate planning of James and Lydia Knutson and through memorial gifts following their deaths. The scholarship reflects their lifelong commitment to Christian education, faithful service, and investment in future generations of students.
James T. Knutson, often known to family and friends as Jim, built a distinguished career in law and public service. A veteran of World War II and graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, he practiced law before serving as a municipal and district judge in Anoka County for more than three decades. Throughout his career, he earned a reputation for fairness, wisdom, integrity, and sound judgment. His daughter, Kari, noted that although his formal title was “The Honorable Judge Knutson,” the word honorable described the way he lived his life as much as the office he held. He was respected not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for his character, humility, thoughtful nature, and sense of humor.
Lydia Knutson brought her own gifts and influence to family life and ministry. A trained nurse, she chose to devote herself to her family, church, and community. She loved reading, studying Scripture, flower gardening, music, and hospitality. Lydia was known for her lifelong commitment to Bible study and teaching, and she maintained a deep interest in Christian thought and ministry throughout her life. Family members remember her as a faithful disciple, devoted wife, loving mother, and thoughtful encourager of others.
Together, James and Lydia were deeply connected to the University of Northwestern for more than forty years. Judge Knutson served on the Board of Trustees beginning in the 1950s and remained a faithful supporter of the institution through both seasons of growth and periods of challenge. Northwestern was an important part of the fabric of their lives, and they developed lasting relationships with its leaders, faculty, and staff. Their daughter Kari later reflected that her parents’ involvement with UNW was both encouraging and enriching and that the university occupied a special place in their hearts.
The Knutsons believed strongly in Christian higher education and in preparing students for lives of faithful service. They gave generously of their time, talents, and resources because they believed that Christ-centered education could influence both individuals and communities for generations. The scholarship established in their honor continues that investment by supporting students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and Christian character.
Today, the Judge James T. & Lydia E. Knutson Endowed Scholarship serves as a lasting testimony to two lives marked by integrity, faithfulness, generosity, and service. Through this scholarship, future students are encouraged to pursue academic excellence while living lives that reflect the values James and Lydia modeled so well.
