Ken and Carol Boehlje Legacy Scholarship

Scholarship Criteria:

The student recipient(s) shall be enrolled at the University of Northwestern as a full-time student and represent and demonstrate the high ideals of the Mission, Vision, and Values of the University of Northwestern. Additional preference is given to students who come from a family in which a parent is involved with full-time ministry abroad. Special consideration is also given to students who demonstrate financial need and/or who, through a family-related hardship (such as the death of a parent), may be prevented from continuing their educational experience without financial assistance.

Scholarship Story (written by Carol Boehlje):

Ken was a graduate of Iowa State University. After working in the Agricultural Business field for several years, Ken decided to attend the University of Northwestern to obtain some biblical training. One of the highlights of his time there was singing in the concert choir and going on the spring concert tour.

Ken and I met at church in 1980. I had recently moved to Mason City, IA to start a job after graduating from South Dakota State University. Ken was farming with his dad in the Rockwell/Sheffield area. After a short courtship and a 3-week engagement, we were married.

Ken and I did not have children. We had decided that when we retired from farming, we did not want to rent our ground to the highest bidder. Instead, our desire was to help a young and beginning farm couple/family get established in farming. We had been praying for such a couple, and God provided us with that family.

In February 2016, Ken went home to be with our Lord after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Education was always important to both of us, and like passing our farming operation on to a young couple, I want to help other young people obtain an education through this scholarship fund. This is a way to pass on our legacy to the next generations.
