Scholarship Story:
The Ambassadors in Media Scholarship was established in 1995 by Dave and June Ullman to encourage and equip future Christian communicators who are called to influence culture through the media. Inspired by 2 Corinthians 5:20, "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors," the scholarship reflects both the mission of the University of Northwestern and the Ullmans' conviction that believers should have a strong presence in broadcasting and media professions.
The name Ambassadors in Media was chosen to reflect Northwestern's long-standing emphasis on preparing students to be ambassadors for Christ. Dave and June believed that media professionals have a unique opportunity to communicate truth, influence culture, and represent Christ in places where Christian voices are often underrepresented.
The scholarship also reflects the Ullmans' particular concern for non-traditional students. Dave recognized that older students often face significant financial pressures while pursuing their education. Many are supporting themselves independently, balancing work, family responsibilities, and academic demands while preparing for a new career. By prioritizing non-traditional students, the scholarship seeks to encourage those who demonstrate determination and commitment as they pursue God's calling in broadcasting.
Dave and June's investment in students extended far beyond financial support. After Dave graduated from Northwestern with a degree in broadcasting, he and June became deeply involved in mentoring students. Through Northwestern’s Adopt-A-Student program, they opened their home to students beginning in 1995. They intentionally created an environment where students could experience fellowship, encouragement, and a sense of family.
After purchasing a home in Roseville in 1999, the Ullmans began a tradition that continued for years. Nearly every Sunday evening, students gathered in their home for meals, conversation, games, prayer, and friendship. Dave's passion was mentoring young adults and helping them develop an authentic relationship with Christ. Former students remember the Ullmans as people who made their home a place of belonging, encouragement, and genuine Christian community.
Their generosity was evident not only in opening their home but also in establishing and personally funding the Ambassadors in Media Scholarship. Dave began supporting the fund only a few years after his own graduation, believing that students preparing for careers in broadcasting needed both encouragement and practical support. Through the years, the scholarship has continued to invest in students who are preparing to use their skills and influence for God's purposes.
Today, recipients of the Ambassadors in Media Scholarship become part of a legacy rooted in mentorship, Christian service, and a commitment to bringing a biblical worldview into media and culture. The scholarship reflects Dave and June's desire to see students faithfully represent Christ wherever their careers may lead.
